2. PREFACE

Most works on family genealogy contain list of names, birth dates, places of birth and other vital information. There are also family tree charts showing the linkage between family individuals and relatives. These are all good and helpful presentations and you will see plenty of this in the report, but I have tried to add a little more. As I studied the historical references, and the countless volumes of church records and government documents, I became also interested in the events that were taking place at the time. Questions came to my mind such as, what did they wear? What did they look like? What were the events going on in history at that time? What did the ships look like? And many more questions. As I would spend long nights in libraries reading these references, pictures would form in my mind as to what particular places looked like. For instance, what was Biloxi like when Jacob, Barbe and Christof landed there? What did the coast of the Mississippi River look like just above New Orleans in 1721? How did they live and what did they live in? There are many questions to which I have not found answers yet. This is a never-ending work, and I hope to pass this information on to relatives and descendants who will continue to look for answers.

Future topics that are of interest:

1. Swabia, the German state where Jacob said he came from in the 1724 census.
2. The French port City of Lorient where Jacob, Barbe and Christof boarded The Saint Andre.
3. The ship Saint Andre and the crossing of the Atlantic.
4. The other "Pest Ships" bringing immigrants to Louisiana.
5. The Biloxi landing, Jacob's first step on North American soil.
6. Life along the Mississippi near present-day Destrehan.
7. Governor Bienville.
8. Jacob's neighbors living on the German Coast.

The most famous member of our family tree is Herbert Clark Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. Jacob Huber had Three brothers and one sister. Jacob was the youngest and Gregor Jonas Huber was the second oldest brother. Gregor did not migrate to America and died in Germany in 1741. Gregor's son, Andreas Huber did migrate to America on the ship Two Sisters in 1728 and settled in Pennsylvania. Later he moved to North Carolina around 1774 and died there in 1784. Andreas's son, John M. Hoover, is the Great Great Grandfather of Herbert Clark Hoover.
